BENGALURU: Jayamma (65), a resident of Kurubarahalli, rescued eight children from drowning on Friday. Earlier this year, Jayamma had the older children admitted to a nearby government school and made sure they were provided food, books and bags for free at the school.

“Their parents are poor and work as labourers. Let these children study,’’ she added. The parents could not hide their admiration for her. “She is like a goddess to us. My children are now with me because of her,” Gangamma, one of the parents, said. But the night was not over for Jayamma, who lives in the adjoining lane from where two women, a mother and her daughter, were washed away.

“I saw them as they were being carried away. I could see their hands and it looked as if they were crying for help. But I was unable to do anything,’’ she regretted. Five people died due to rain in Kuruburahalli in Bengaluru West on Friday night.
