BENGALURU: This year onwards, the process for admission to post-graduate (PG) courses at Bangalore University (BU) will go online. The university authorities have taken this decision to ensure hassle-free admissions for students and maintain transparency. Even submission of application, payment of fees and final selection of seats will be done online. The university will soon call for applications for the academic year 2018-19.

Online procedures were tried for admissions to PG law courses during the current academic year, and it received a good response. Prof KR Venugopal, Vice-Chancellor of BU, said, "We are switching to full-fledged online system from this year. We will be keeping offline as a backup option, just in case, there are any technical glitches. Hope there will not be any such issues, but to avoid inconveniences to students, we are keeping things ready."

The online admissions will cover seats available at PG departments in Jnana Bharathi campus and at the affiliated colleges. "Due to trifurcation, the number of colleges has reduced and the online process would be easy for us," Venugopal said.

A few years ago, the same was tried by the university on a pilot basis. "Due to the huge number of colleges, we could not do it. This time, we are fully ready. Students who attended the online counselling of law courses were satisfied and based on opinions from both students and faculties, it was decided to introduce online admissions for other courses too," said Prof Shivaraju, Registrar (Evaluation), BU.

In the offline system, seat aspirants had to visit each of the college or university department where they preferred to get admissions and submit their applications. With the online system, they can submit applications online choosing the department or college of their choice.

Merit list will be out on BU website

Students who apply for PG courses online will have to submit a hard copy of the documents to the department concerned for the purpose of verification. After verification, the departments will announce the merit lists on the university’s website wherein applicants can check the status of their seat. The seat allotment will be announced department-wise on different days. According to a varsity official, the calendar would be planned for one day per one PG course and the counselling would be conducted at BU’s Jnanabharathi campus.
