BENGALURU: Upset over her husband’s repeated harassment for not giving birth to a male child, a 27-year-old woman ended her life after she set herself ablaze while the two daughters looked on. The incident took place at their house in Jigani near Anekal and police have arrested her husband on charges of abatement of suicide on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Veena, wife of Shashikumar. The couple had been for married for seven years. Shashikumar works as a used car dealer.A senior police officer said, “The incident took place on March 28. The couple had a fight after dinner over a trivial issue. He slapped her in front of the daughters. He was frequently abusing Veena for not giving a birth to a male child. Upset over this, she locked herself in a room. Soon after Shashikumar left the house, she set herself ablaze in front of the daughters.
However, the kids were not hurt as she ran inside a room and locked herself. The two girls alerted their neighbours and she was rushed to a nearby hospital where it was declared brought dead. However, she left no suicide note”.
“Veena’s parents, alleged that Shashikumar set her ablaze and then left the house. Shashikumar was also harassing his in-laws over money. The police recorded the statement of the children as eyewitnesses for further investigation,” Jigani police added.
