BENGALURU: Kerala-born and Chennai-based artist Vidya Sundar likes to portray cosmic harmony and the beauty of nature through her work. This  weekend, the artist showcases her work at the Vismaya Gallery in a show titled, Tones of Seasons.

The artist’s surreal canvases, with bold colours and brush strokes, give the illusion of the human figure through motifs of nature and animals. The gallery is hosting 27 of her canvases from the past decade. The paintings showcased are from the series Ragas, Silent Songs, Memories, Dreams and Desires, and Ritusamhara. The themes of her canvases, while always focussing on nature, interpresent many aspects of it. For example, Ragas are her interpretation of music and ‘Memories, Dreams and Desires’ bring to the forefront fables and folktales.

The show was inaugurated on October 25 by renowned painter JMS Mani. The city-based artist is known for his Badami series of paintings. Speaking at the occasion, the 69-year-old shared some words of wisdom for the younger artist. He gave instances and anecdotes of his exhibitions during his early days of career, and stressed on the importance of perseverance, especially in the field of art. “This is the first time, I am seeing Vidya’s work and I’m really impressed. The landscapes and surreal pieces really bring out the atmosphere and convey the emotions,” said the seasoned artist about Tones of Seasons.

Vidya said the Bengaluru art culture is very different than Chennai’s. “Here we get a lot of casual walk-in visitors and serious art critics and buyers. In Chennai, there are a lot of serious buyers, but other people are not so interested in art,” she added. She hopes the show is a success in Bengaluru and wishes that some critics visit the exhibition.

The show is on till October 28 at Vismaya Art Gallery,
MG Road
