BENGALURU: After a woman was killed in a submerged KR Circle underpass following heavy downpour on May 21, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has started work on repairing, cleaning drains and improving connectivity at KR Circle.

However, heavy traffic has been impeding engineering and storm water drain works, and little has been done. “Work to clear channels to ensure free flow of water is under way. But the traffic movement is slowing down our work. We will request the traffic police to close the flyover for at least 15 days. We will also check all the underpasses in the city, especially those which are vulnerable to avoid any untoward incidents,” a senior BBMP official said.

Ahead of heavy showers, the BBMP is planning to write to the traffic police to close the KR Circle underpass connecting Nrupatunga Road for at least 15 days. The BBMP has already requested the traffic police to close the underpasses whenever it rains. The works were supposed to be done during summer and pre-monsoon period, the official said, but it was delayed due to elections.

“We will also seek reports from the contractors regarding the works. They have shown in the bills works have been done. When there is flooding, it might not be the case. If the connectivity of water channels were checked in advance, flooding would not have happened,” the official said.
