CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government TASMAC Employees Union affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Government Employees Union has urged the State government to detach bars from TASMAC liquor shops.
Bars should be established at a distance of 1-2 km away from the liquor shops, as is being done in Kerala, suggested K Balasubramanian, its State president, while sitting on a hunger strike on Monday to press their demands.
This, he said, would prevent TASMAC employees from being harassed by those running the bars.
Citing a recent assault on a TASMAC supervisor at Mylapore, he said, the victim was reportedly attacked by Augustine Babu, the owner of a bar attached to TASMAC shop number 930, and his goons.
He said, “The supervisor, Suresh, was hit by henchmen while he was shifting the shop as per an order of the TASMAC to vacate the premises. However, Augustine and his accomplices attacked him to protest against it.”
He said even after a complaint had been registered, the police were yet to initiate action against the assaulters. “In such a scenario, the government should come forward to either take over all the bars functioning in Tamil Nadu or detach it from the liquor shops,” Balasubramanian urged.
