CHENNAI: In what is considered to be a pioneering effort in the state, Global Hospitals and Healthcity will soon procure reusable ports to conduct single incision laparoscopic surgeries (SILS).  The single port, through which the surgery is done, is generally a disposable unit, and costs Rs 35,000.

The first such surgery using a reusable port will be done on August 28, when a day-long workshop on SILS  will be held.

The surgery will be conducted by Dr Giovanni Dapri, assistant professor of Surgery at the European School of laparoscopic surgery in Saint - Pierre University Hospital, Belgium. The reusable curved instruments devised by Dr Dapri, named after him, will be used by the hospital for further laparoscopic surgeries.

The workshop will be conducted in association with the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo Surgeons. Over 350 people, including laparoscopic surgeons and nurses, will participate in the workshop, said Dr John AC Thanakumar, Head of the Department, Institute of Minimal Access, Bariatric and GI Surgery.

He also said the reusable port would cost Rs 50,000 and using it would make laparoscopic surgeries cheaper by  at least Rs 10,000.
