
CHENNAI: The city saw the inauguration of the first computerised passenger reservation centre unveiled by G Sentamizhan, Minister for Information, Law, Courts and Prison, at the Guindy Railway Station on Wednesday morning. It will be set up under the Rs1000 PRS (Passenger Reservation System) Centres’ scheme.
According to S Anantha raman, Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai division of Southern Railways, the Rs1000 PRS’ scheme of the MPs that entitles each MP to seek a quota of PRS facility in his constituency has been launched in the Chennai division with the aid of C Rajendran, MP from Chennai South Constituency, who sought the quota for PRS in Guindy.
Based on his recommendation, the Railway Ministry provided funds of `6 lakhs for the setting up of the PRS.
“This is the first PRS to be set up under the 1000 PRS scheme in Chennai division. The PRS that requires computer connectivity, UPS and generators has been instituted at a cost of `6 lakhs,” he said.
The installation of the PRS will strengthen the presence of computerised reservation that covers 161 PRS centres that are functioning in Southern Railways at present.
Speaking to the City Express, on the sidelines of the inauguration, C Rajendran said that the PRS system will benefit the general public by easing the crowds at the station that caters to a heavy flow of commuters throughout the day. The event was presided over by Mayor M Subramanian.
At present, the PRS centre at Guindy is the 36th centre in the Chennai division, and the 108th centre in the State.
