CHENNAI: The Chief Controller of Research and Development, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Ministry of Defence, Dr A  Sivathanu Pillai has said that BrahMos II, the cruise missile, has been designed with an unique capability of steep dive.

"It can manoeuvre and do a steep dive, which is the first-of-its-kind in the world," the noted scientist said while briefing news persons on the sidelines of the 87th college day celebrations of Loyola College here on Tuesday. The BrahMos is also equipped with target discrimination, wherein, the missile would select a particular target for attacks, he said and emphasised that the Indian Army is the only force in the world to have a supersonic cruise missile.

Earlier, delivering his address on the occasion, Sivathanu Pillai spoke in detail about the state-of-the-art weapons and missiles available with Indian defence forces and research in the fields of moon rovers and nano technology carried out across the world.

Pointing out that future wars would be fought with cyber technology, he said that the country needs young brains to counter them. "About 580 million citizens in our country are under 35 years of age," he said in his speech titled, 'Empowering India for Global Leadership'.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr V Mohan, Chairman and Managing Director, Dr Mohan's Diabetes Specialities Center and Madras Diabetes Research Foundation urged students to work hard without wasting time, as it would take them to new heights.

Dr B Jeyaraj, Principal, Loyola College said that a restructured curriculum would be implemented from next year. "We have placed 90 per cent of the students, who have registered with the placement office for jobs, in reputed companies and organisations," he added.

Faculty members and students were felicitated as part of the college day celebrations.
