Man evades customs duty of Rs 50 lakh, lands in CBI net

Sleuths of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested a clearing and forwarding agent for evading customs duty of `50 lakh, besides misquoting the import/export code of another firm to import goods.

CBI sources said Radhakrishnan, managing director of Vee Vee Clearing and Forwarding Pvt Ltd, was arrested for evading customs duty. They said Radhakrishnan had allegedly used the import/export code of Majestic Impex to import air conditioners into the country and had declared the consignment as spare parts of air conditioners. Radhakrishnan, according to sources, was acting on behalf of a highly placed politician.

Subsequently, a case was registered by CBI against Radhakrishnan, Kathirvel, Assistant  Commissioner, Customs, Chennai, Sanjay Kakkar and Mani, both appraisers, Guhan,  inspector, Saibudeen, proprietor, M/s Majestic Impex, Sheik Parith, an importer, Basheer Ahammed, an importer, and Balamurugan, clerk of M/s Vee Vee Clearing and Forwarding Ltd.

The CBI Court granted custody of the accused to the CBI for the next two days.
