Traffic on Nungambakkam High Road came to standstill for a short while on Wednesday evening after a woman jumped off Anna flyover to her death, shocking motorists and pedestrians.
Police said the woman, identified as Anjali, 26, was rushed to the Government Royapettah Hospital where she was declared brought dead. When Express telephoned one of her brothers, he refused to talk.
Teynampet police, who investigated the case, said Anjali was married to Dinesh Paswan of Kolkata and had a six-year-old girl.
Dinesh had reportedly left her and gone back to Kolkata while the woman, who migrated along with her parents and three siblings to Chennai 10 years ago, continued to live in the city and work at a beauty parlour in Parsn complex, Nungambakkam.
Police sources said the woman had fallen in love with Bhuvaneshwaran, also a native of Kolkata working in the city at Parsn Manere, six months ago and he had promised to marry her. But later, when she asked him to marry her, he allegedly refused.
On Wednesday evening, she informed her younger sister Anita over phone about her lover’s refusal to tie the knot and her decision to kill herself.
An investigating officer said they questioned her parents, including her father Shenbu Das, and they said Anjali had been staying with her lover from September 11 to 13 and when they called her on her mobile phone, the man had picked up. He had told her parents that he would marry her.
“It’s a case of failed love. She sustained severe head injury and died while on her way to hospital,” said S Baskar, Assistant Commissioner, Teynampet.
Police registered a case of abetment of suicide and detained Bhuvaneshwaran.
