'Re-elect VP, director of housing body'

The Madras High Court has directed the TN Co-operative Societies to hold fresh elections within two months to select a director and vice-president of the South Chennai Co-operative Housing Society Ltd in Vadapalani after it was found that a woman had fraudulently become director by impersonation.

Justice D Hariparanthaman gave the direction while disposing of a writ petition from P Sumathi. She contended that one C Sumathi, who was not even a member of the society, fraudulently used her membership number in nomination papers and got elected as a director.

When the matter came up for hearing on July 4 last, C Sumathi’s counsel admitted that the membership number of P Sumathi had been “inadvertently” used by C Sumathi in her nomination papers and hence she had resigned from the post of director. Election Commissioner ordered to hold a repoll for selection of director and vice-president.
