A 15-day-old male baby, allegedly abandoned by his parent, was recovered from the ladies compartment of an Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train at Tamabaram railway station near here on Wednesday night. The baby was admitted to the Chromepet Government Hospital for treatment, a Government Railway Police (GRP) officer said.

Acting on information from passengers, GRP personnel rushed to a EMU, which was about to depart for the EMU shed for maintenance at 10.30 pm and found a baby lying silently.

“We suspect that the child’s parent must have boarded the train at Chromepet or Pallavaram railway station. A child welfare organisation at Chengalpattu was alerted as soon as we rescued the baby,” a GRP officer said.

Since the child was weak, it was admitted to the Chromepet Government Hospital for treatment. “We have not registered a case. The baby would be taken care off by the child welfare organisation, which may also give it for adoption through the legal means,” Tambaram GRP sub-inspector Somasundaram said.
