23-year-old killed in OMR accident

Helmet-less riding snuffed out another life in the city, this time that of a 23-year-old, and left another person critical after their motorbikes collided at Kandhan Chavadi on Old Mahabalipuram Road.

Helmet-less riding snuffed out another life in the city, this time that of a 23-year-old, and left another person critical after their motorbikes collided at Kandhan Chavadi on Old Mahabalipuram Road, here on Monday afternoon.

According to the police, Jegannathan, son of Murali, a union leader at the New Indian Express Group, was on his way to meet his professor to discuss higher education prospects when his bike collided with that of Subramani (23), an engineering student and a resident of Pulianthope, on Nehru Nagar I street a little after noon.

Jegannathan suffered head injuries and died on the spot.

Even as police were tending to Jegannathan, Subramani’s friends took him to a private hospital without informing them.

Meanwhile, police traced Subramani’s address through his vehicle number plate and informed his parents about the accident. Later, Subramani’s friends moved him to Fortis Malar Hospital in Adyar.

Guindy Traffic Investigation Wing Inspector Ramesh said, “Both the riders were not wearing helmets. Jegannathan’s body has been moved to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem while the condition of Subramani is critical.”

As many as 65 fatal accidents were reported in 2012 on the Old Mahabalipuram Road stretch alone, of which 41 were two-wheeler riders not wearing helmets.
