Woman gets five year rigorous imprisonment for poisoning the baby

A woman who tried to kill her relative’s newborn son in 2010 by feeding him pesticide was sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment (RI) by a sessions court here on Wednesday.

In January 2010, J Rekha (37) went to the Egmore Maternity Hospital to visit her brother-in-law’s new-born. When the mother, Girija, was away from the hospital ward, Rekha fed the baby with pesticide, apparently to settle scores for a family feud over a piece of land.

Timely intervention saved the child. Rekha was handed over to police who booked her her for attempting to murder the baby under section 307 of the IPC.

On Wednesday, III Additional Judge N Thandapani sentenced her to five-year rigorous imprisonment.
