A two-day Tirukkural Tamil elocution competition was held here recently. The competition was organised by Shriram Ilakkiya Kazhagam, the literary wing of Shriram Group.

The finale of the competition will be held on September 28 in Chennai and the winners will be awarded cash prizes, said the organisers.

Started in 1987, Shriram Ilakkiya Kazhagam is working towards highlighting value-based living as underlined in the Tirukkural.

In order to take the values of Tirukkural to the people, Shriram Ilakkiya Kazhagam conducts a speech competition every year.

Speaking to City Express, one of the organisers said, “Shriram Ilakkiya Kazhagam has organised such speech competitions for the past 25 years. This is their 26th year. Students from any school or college can participate in the competition. The topics for the competition will be based on the concepts which can be found in Tirukkural. Students are asked to put forth their thoughts over such themes only in Tamil.”

He added , “We are conducting the competition under four categories. Students from class six to eight—junior  category, class nine and ten students—senior category. In the ‘super senior’ category, students of higher secondary classes will be participating and in the fourth category, college and university students will take part. Students from each category will be given prizes.

“Since, the competition is being conducted at the state level, we have students from across the State. The competition will be organised at 12 centres across Tamil Nadu. In Chennai, we conducted the competition in two phases. In the first phase, students from South Chennai  participated and it was held at the Dr MGR Janaki College for Women. In the second phase, students from North Chennai participated  at the Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Mogappair East,” he said.
