XII additional special judge for CBI Cases, R Killivalavan sentenced K R Velu to undergo two years of rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 on him.

The  Anti-Corruption Branch of the CBI had registered a case against Velu, his wife V Chellammal and daughters V Rani, V Jayanthi and V Jothi Lakshmi in 2002. Velu was charged with abusing his position and possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. Velu had acquired assets to the tune of Rs 75.66 lakh between January 1986-August 2002 even as his total income was Rs 49.26 lakh.
