IRCS to impart first-aid lessons to 1 lakh students

For the first time, Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) will provide first-aid training to one lakh university level students in this academic year.

On June 3 and 4, IRCS Tamil Nadu Branch had organised a two-day first-aid training programme for the Youth Red Cross district co-coordinators and university co-coordinators; junior Red Cross district level conveners and joint-conveners; and IRCS district level office bearers.

As many as 110 persons from across all the 32 districts attended the programme, which was addressed by Tamil Nadu State Branch Chairman, Harish L Mehta.

Officials said that this was the first time the Government of India had given permission to IRCS to train the students in first-aid.

Until now, only St John’s Ambulance Association was imparting the first-aid training to students.

Speaking to City Express, S N Janardhanan, Sub-branch Secretary and Trainer, IRCS said, “Those who participated in the two-day training programme took up both written and practical exams at the end of the programme. They will be given certificates from IRCS Delhi for the successful completion of the course.”

He added, “In Tamil Nadu, we will train 10,000 students from each university. If students are given first-aid training they will extend their help to the needy.”

Gnanaguruparan, Chief Administrative Officer, IRCS said, “Besides, first-aid training programme, we also provide various other programmes such as disaster management. From January to March this year, we provided one-day orientation programme in disaster management for 6,000 students.”
