CHENNAI: Varnalaya’s upcoming exhibition will showcase art and craft items made by 20 students of the institution alongside the creations of their mentor and teacher Fevicryl expert Jayashree Narayanan. The products on display at the two-day exhibition-cum-sale will comprise a range of handmade and handcrafted art works like glass paintings, painted sarees, wall hangings, glass rangoli and clay-crafted dolls. The exhibition will open on December 27 at the CP Art Centre on Eldams Road.
Jayashree says, “These are entirely handmade and handcrafted products that will be on display and sale at the exhibition by my students. Most of the students who have come up with the products have been trained by me for the last two years. The rest are old students who have been working on the forms of art and craft for many years now. The stalls will be put up by women from across age groups — college students and homemakers.”
Trained by senior-most Fevicryl expert Rajammal Venugopal, Jayashree took to art and crafts more than 20 years ago. Assisting her teacher, she began conducting classes for those interested in art and crafts, after just three days of training under her. An expert hand at several kinds of arts and crafts, Jayashree is also a recipient of the Fevicryl Award, apart from conducting classes on interior designing and fashion designing. Promoting arts and crafts at various levels, she has been supported by her sister Usha Krishnan, another Fevicryl expert.
