Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) Techniques  need to be extended to accidents in the construction sector, said C Gnanasekara Babu Rao, Director (in-charge), directorate of Industrial Safety & Health. He was speaking at the one-day national seminar on ‘Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment’ at the Regional Labour Institute (RLI),Chennai recently.

He went on to say that Health and Safety is an important aspect for the growth and success of any industry. Proper attention  must be given to the safety and welfare of people at the workplace, which will increase productivity.

Subba Rao, vice president & head, Cholamandalam MS Risk Services, in his keynote address highlighted the various aspects of HIRA and stressed the need for implementing it in industries. Modern workplaces are becoming more complex, the manufacturing processes are turning into hazardous locations where safety, health and the well-being of workers demand an effective implementation of various safety and health systems.

M C Sambandam, additional director, Directorate of Industrial Safety & Health, Government of Tamil Nadu, in his special address emphasised the need for creating safety awareness and culture in industries. He mentioned that the involvement of each and every person in the Industry was needed for better safety performance.

A national policy was earlier declared by the Government of India, Ministry of Labour & Employment, on ‘Occupational Safety, Health and Environment at Workplace’ on April 20, 2009.The Regional Labour Institute, Chennai has an observatory cell functioning as a part of the implementation of the national policy. This one-day seminar was organised keeping in view the effective management of occupational risks in industries.
