'Students prefer Arts to Science'

CHENNAI: The city’s arts and science colleges have started the admission process for the next academic year. Students from various parts of Tamil Nadu have been spotted in the arts colleges applying for courses of their choice. Anna Adarsh College for Women, which is situated in Anna Nagar, has experienced a recent upsurge in the number students opting for commerce-based courses in the institution.

The college provides a wide range of courses in science, commerce, tourism and travel management, English literature, computer science, and nutrition and dietetics, which a number of students have opted for. Pavithra, a student from Villivakam, has opted for this course and says that the coaching in Nutrition and Dietetics is very good.

“Though new courses like Tourism Management and Nutrition are trendy, the old courses still appeal to many students.  Most commerce students go for BCom and others choose streams based on their passion and interests,” said a faculty member who wished not to be identified. She said that BCom and Computer Science remained the favourite courses for many students.

While many parents try to enrol their children in nearby colleges for convenience, there are students like Soniya, who stays in Madhavaram, who commute all the way by public transport regardless of other general difficulties.
