Melody and laughter are immensely therapeutic, says Dr Sailakshmi Balijepally, founder and pediatrician of Ekam that is involved in child care work across the State of Tamil Nadu. Working out a programme that will bring together both elements, Ekam’s programme on April 24 will have a performance by singer Unnikrishnan and a fun session by the Komali MeDi Clown Academy.
Dr Sailakshmi says, “This will be the first big show for us, in the last five years. We have a large group of children to be taken care of and such a programme will help us bring in enough funds for the purpose of health care.”
Started almost a decade ago to complement the existing public health system, Ekam branched out on its own after serving as a community health project, in 2009. Working with government hospitals to aid them in the form of equipment, drugs, human resources, and so on, Ekam also launched operations in Mumbai in 2012.
In the last few years, the Foundation has covered close to one lakh children across TN through its project pertaining to infant and child health.
Dr Sailakshmi says that owing to the reach of the project and managing a gamut of areas within a dynamic set-up like health care, there is a constant need for generating funds. “We hope to have programmes every two months. The expansiveness of the work we are involved in requires a consistent flow of funds,” she adds.
