Public Vent Ire as Man Killed in Freak Accident

CHENNAI: A 23-year-old man riding a two-wheeler was run over by a lorry in a freak accident on the Tiruvallur High Road on Sunday.

Police said Pandurengan, a resident of Ellamma Kandigai in Penalurpettai in Tiruvallur, who was working in a private firm in Selaiyur, was heading home after the night shift when the accident occurred.

Pandurengan, who left office around 6.30 am, was passing through Polivakkam on Sriperumbudur-Tiruvallur Main Road, when the bike’s handlebar brushed against a barricade put up by the Tiruvallur Police. In the impact, he was thrown off the bike and came under the wheels of lorry speeding towards Sriperumbudur. The bike was badly mangled in the accident. Pandurengan suffered severe head injuries and died on the spot. Fearing the wrath of local residents, the lorry driver sped away.

Passersby alerted the police, who alerted the personnel manning neighbouring checkposts to intercept the lorry. People of Polivakkam gathered at the accident spot and sought a speed-breaker there, since the area was prone to accidents and saw high pedestrian movement. This led to tension and traffic was disrupted for about 30 minutes until police assured that they would take up their request with  the district administration.
