CHENNAI: In a freak incident, a 25-year-old woman who was in an inebriated condition, died after allegedly being pushed down by her husband, at their residence in Thirumullaivoyal on Monday night. Alex, the husband of the deceased, was arrested on Tuesday.

Police said Alex (33), a painter, was living with his wife Devi (25), and their five-year-old son and three-year-old daughter. On Monday evening, Alex returned home from work in Redhills to find his wife drunk as usual and abusing neighbours and the family.
When Alex chided her, it led to a wordy duel between the two, following which Alex slapped Devi on her face and pushed her to the ground. Devi, who lay unconscious, was rushed to a private hospital where doctors declared her dead on arrival. On information, the Thirumullaivoyal Police moved the body to the Government Stanley Hospital for a post-mortem. Alex, who was rattled by the incident, went into hiding since Monday night and was later nabbed. Preliminary investigations revealed that Devi met with a road accident four months ago in which her face was disfigured. She was recuperating from the surgery, when, Devi reportedly took to drinking and was causing trouble in the family.
