Fake Cop Takes College Girl on Bike, Rapes Her off ECR

CHENNAI: In a shocking incident that raises serious concern over the safety of beach-goers, especially women, a 19-year-old   private engineering college student was allegedly raped by a man posing as a police personnel at Akkarai near Neelankarai, off East Coast Road, on Monday evening.

The girl and her boyfriend, also studying second year engineering in the same college, were visiting the beach near Akkarai in the evening, when they were intercepted by a man in khaki trousers and a whiteshirt riding a two-wheeler at Sunrise Avenue — ECR junction at around 5.30 pm.

The man claimed he was a policeman and told the couple that he needs to inquire with them as the girl’s parents had reportedly approached Semmencherry police looking for her. Also, he collected the ID cards from the boy and girl, and made the girl ride pillion with him after instructing the boy to come to the police station on his own.

Then, the man reportedly took the girl to a secluded spot, making her believe that a woman police official’s residence was in the neighbourhood. He then tied the girl down, raped her and threatened her with dire consequences if she complained. She was then dropped on the ECR about an hour later, and the college ID cards and mobile phone were given to her.

In the meantime, the boy, who had reached Semmencherry police by bus from Akkarai, tried to reach her mobile. The calls were picked up by the man who told the boy that the girl was being interrogated at a place near the Semmencherry police station, adding that they would reach the police station after inquiry.

As his wait proved futile, the boy finally went into the police station, looking for his girl friend. A few hours later, the girl reached the station and informed the police about the incident. A case was registered under section 363 (kidnapping) and 376 (rape) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the police are investigating.
