Police Picks Holes in Versions of Students

CHENNAI: The complaint about the alleged rape of an engineering college student off ECR has puzzled the police officials investigating into the case, as they have found what they claim as gaps in the versions of the girl and her boyfriend, who were not giving convincing replies.

The girl said, in her complaint, that she had come to the beach with the boy at around 4.30 pm on Monday and the alleged abduction and rape happened while they were heading back home later in the night. However, according to a senior police official, there are indications that the couple was there from 11 am.

“The boy, an athlete, reportedly failed to turn up for the inter-collegiate meet held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. This was revealed by the two later on Tuesday,” the official noted.

“We found no resistance from the girl during the said rape. We wonder if any girl would accept the drop offered by her rapist to get back to the main road. Even her clothes were not crumpled,” the official added.

“The boy claims he saw the man riding away with his (boy’s) girlfriend up to the Akkarai checkpost. Based on this, we checked the available CCTV footage. It shows the girl getting on the bike. But, the quality is not clear to establish the identity of the rider,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the boy’s family has told them that the girl had turned up at their house a couple of times earlier and created scenes before the family. “She was the one who has been after our boy,” a member of the boy’s family reportedly told the police. The girl’s family has reportedly told the police that she was behaving strangely for a month, and was highly unpredictable.

The boy, officials said, seems to be in a relationship with the girl for almost two years now. One of his family members, who was present at the police station on Monday night, backed the police officials view that they did not find any evidence of rape.
