CHENNAI: Ten days after the murder of Saraswathy, a 27-year-old resident of Velachery, the city police arrested a suspect, reportedly her friend.

The accused Pooja (19) was arrested along with her husband Binoj (22) at the Koyambedu bus terminus as they were attempting to flee. Investigations revealed that Pooja was a friend of the victim and that she had planned the murder.

Saraswathy, who was living alone in her residence, became a friend of Pooja over a period of time. The accused had an eye on the jewellery the victim was wearing. Both Pooja and her husband visited Saraswathy at her house in the evening on July 2 and strangulated her with a nylon string.

Saraswathy, who was spotted unconscious by her sister, was admitted at a private hospital in Pallikaranai, but she died while being taken to the RGGGH on July 3.

Subsequently, a special team was formed, which nabbed the culprits and recovered a silver anklet and mobile phone among other items.
