CHENNAI: Two policemen of Kodungaiyur police station were placed under suspension, a day after a 26-year-old man died in police custody.

Officials said the departmental action was taken after a preliminary enquiry conducted by a Joint Commissioner found them with dereliction of duty.

City police commissioner S George issued the suspension orders.

The suspended officers were inspector Baskar and sub- inspector Pandiaraj on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Egmore V Metropolitan Magistrate Uma Maheshwari visited Stanley Government Hospital on Thursday where the body of the victim, D Gopal, was kept.

She conducted an enquiry with the police personnel and the family members of the victim.

Gopal, 26, an accused in the two murder cases, was arrested by Kodungaiyur police on Tuesday when he allegedly tried to kill one of his rivals.

He fell unconscious in the police station on Wednesday and was taken to Stanley Government Hospital at noon where he was declared brought dead.

Relatives of the deceasedman blamed police for the untimely death.

However, police maintained that Gopal died as he was severely beaten up by a few persons on Tuesday night when he tried to kill one Parthiban at RR Nagar in Kodungaiyur.
