CHENNAI: As soon as one clicks on the Chennai Corporation website, the first thing that meets the eye is the flashing button for online booking of burial grounds, freezer boxes and mortuary vans.
However, for a major chunk of the population living in the expanded areas of the Corporation, it still remains elusive.
Out of the total 208 burial grounds available in the city only a paltry 38 have the option of online booking.
The booking facility which provides the option to book burial grounds or freezer boxes five days in advance at zero cost is a widely used option among residents. However, even after three years since the expansion, the remaining 170 burial grounds, some of which are in areas like Perungudi and Ambattur have not been included in the feature. Corporation officials said the work to include them was underway. “We are currently trying to expand the feature to the other areas as well,” said an official.
