CHENNAI: The city police arrested a six-member gang, which duped a diamond researcher of a ruby, and recovered from them the precious stone worth `12 crore on Saturday.

According to police, the researcher, R Maheshwaran (61) of Vadapalani was duped by his acquaintance Raja (24) and his accomplices who stole the ruby from him by posing as genuine purchasers on June 24.

In his complaint, Maheswaran, running a diamond technology research institute, said he had picked up the ruby from Anantapur district in Andhra pradesh two years ago, while pursuing a research. To clear his mounting debts, he had decided to dispose it off and posted it online. Raja and his accomplices approached him as buyers and made away with the stone.

Based on available clues, police nabbed Raja and his accomplices Sakthikumar (24), Syed Rizwan (26), Salim (28), Shabbir (27) and Baba ( 27) near Kodambakkam. They were produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.
