CHENNAI:Friday evening will go down as one of the most mellifluous nights in recent times for it was when a show titled Rafi Ke Nagme, Chandan Ke Surme was staged at the Museum Theatre in Egmore.

The show had the songs of the legendary singer Mohammed Rafi rendered by stage singers. The event was held to mark the 35th death anniversary of the playback singer.

Chandan, Rashmi and Lalitha, not only sang the hits of Rafi, but also recollected interesting incidents that took place when those songs came out first. In a corner of the hall, one could spot three women reciting the lyrics of every song delivered and laughing appreciatively when a particularly nice stanza was sung. Others were enjoying the numbers.

Some of the songs that had the audience at their merriest best were Piya bina piya bina and Nainon mein badra chhaye by Rashmi, Ye vaadiyan ye fizayien bhula nahin, Tere liye raat saji tere liye mehfil hasi by Chandan and Aap ki nazron mein by Lakshmi. This song in particular and the manner in which it was rendered came in for praise.

Chandan was in his elements, delivering songs which reminded the listeners there of not only Rafi’s voice, but his expressions as well. When he went about singing numbers such as Dil ki raat, deewana hai sanam and Deewana Hua Badal along with the female singers, the audience clapped along when he finished. Some of them cheered even the announcement of the song.
