His Mantra for the Season, Keep it Simple

Varun Bahl, who works with big names like Karan Johar, tells us about his latest Spring Summer line that puts the focus on classic styles.

Simple yet classic. A collection that offers light comfortable clothes that are elegant, is being showcased in the city.

Varun Bahl, who is known for his generous use of innovative design and intricate embroidery, has taken a new direction with his Spring Summer 2015 collection that is being showcased at Collage, Greams Road. He puts the focus on a simpler, classic and understated elegance through modern design techniques.

“This collection captures the essence of the season with dreamy, light, wearable and classy outfits for any occasion for the wearer. Hence the focus is on the design and the complete look,” said Varun in conversation with CE.

What stands out in this particular collection is the use of layers in the outfits, which adds to the garment. This collection has a variety of tunics, kurtas, and classic straight kurtas in a variety of interesting silhouettes in georgette, crepes and chiffons, he added.

When asked about his inspiration, Varun said that it was the elements of nature and the spectrum of colours that had inspired him when he began to design.

According to him, this particular collection has not only been a success in India, but also overseas.

He also gives a new spin to the classic anarkali, using pastels or sari-gowns in sensuous colours. With his artistic sensibility and an eye for detail, Varun was a design graduate from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, and he launched his label in 2001.

In 2004, his Spring Summer collection 2004 was showcased at White in Milan which brought him international acclaim and commercial success. He was also chosen by Camera Nazionale Della Moda Italiana, Milano to showcase his SS ‘07 and AW ‘07/’08 at Milan Fashion Week, making him one of the first few Indian designers to have participated in the event.

He also has a commercially successful menswear prêt label with acclaimed Indian filmmaker Karan Johar called Karan Johar + Varun Bahl since 2010.
