Jaya Puts Off Party Events, Marks Respect to Kalam's Demise

CHENNAI: Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday postponed all party programmes for a week as a mark of respect following the demise of former President APJ Abdul Kalam. In a statement here, Jayalalithaa said she was drowned in deep sorrow over the untimely passing away of a great soul.

Describing Abdul Kalam as a celebrated son of Mother Tamil, Jayalalithaa said the late President was known for his simple life and the virtues practised by him. He had earned a place in history by sheer hard work and sacrifice. “As a homage to the departed soul, all programmes of the AIADMK scheduled for one week stand postponed”, she added. The State government has already announced a seven-day mourning till August 2.
