Cattle Rescued from Unlicensed Slaughter House

CHENNAI: Volunteers of an animal rights organisation rescued a cow and three calves from an unlicensed slaughter house in Velachery on Saturday morning.

“We came across a very dirty and dingy slaughter house. When we asked the person to show his licence, he didn’t have one,” said Arun Prasanna from People for Cattle in India (PFCI).

Following the information provided by the organisation, two butchers from the slaughter house were booked under Sections 428 and 429 of the Indian Penal Code — for maiming or killing cattle — Slaughter House Rules Act 2001, and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, by the Thoraipakkam police.

“In the last one year, we have rescued 54 cattle from unlicensed slaughter houses. There are still several more functioning; we need stricter supervisions to end such cruelty,” Arun added.

The rescued cattle were handed over to the Indian Institute of Animal Welfare (IIAW).
