Bus Rams into Ambulance, Kills Three

CHENNAI: Three persons travelling in an ambulance, including the driver, were killed when it rammed into a private bus at Kaatrambakkam junction near Sriperumbudur on Saturday.

The ambulance was ferrying the body of B Rajendran (60), a resident of Reddy street in Sriperumbudur after he died of cardiac arrest, police said.

Around 12.30 am, Rajendran was taken to a private hospital after he complained of chest pain. His wife, Vijaya and son Sathyanarayanan were in the ambulance. Rajendran was first taken to Jaya hospital and was later referred to ACS hospital in Karayanchavadi, police investigations revealed. Rajendran was declared dead-on-arrival by the doctors there after which his wife and son were taking the body back in the same ambulance.

Around 2 am, when the ambulance was nearing Kaatrambakkam junction on the GWT road, a staff bus of TVS Logistics Pvt. Ltd which was ahead of the ambulance suddenly swerved right to take a U-turn, police said.

The ambulance driver was taken by surprise and rammed into the bus. “The two family members and ambulance driver A Periyasamy (35) of Sathur Madurai died on the spot,” a police officer said.

The bodies were shifted to Sriperumbudur GH for autopsy. Based on a complaint by Rajendran’s son-in-law, B Vinoth, Sriperumbudur Police registered a case and arrested the bus driver Natarajan. Traffic was affected for one hour in the stretch following the accident.
