MDMK Faults DMK for City's Mess

CHENNAI: The MDMK on Monday squarely laid the blame for encroachments on water bodies and canals that were severely affected by the floods on the Government Order passed by the DMK on 30 December 2006. In addition the MDMK also laid the blame on the DMK party for the ban on jallikattu.

The MDMK asked the State government to follow the Madras High Court to demolish all such encroachments. Out of the 5,000 lakes in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts only 2,600 are still found in PWD records.

The MDMK pointed out in another resolution that the ban on jallikattu came into force during the UPA government and the DMK which was a constituent of the Centre did not lift the ban. The jallikattu players hold on to the bulls for a few seconds and the bulls are not tortured unlike bullfights in Spain. The game has been a tradition in Tamil Nadu for thousands of years with stone inscriptions to prove its existence, the party said and demanded steps to lift the ban.
