Mom, Girl Injured as Robbers Push Them Off the Bike

CHENNAI: A 40-year-old woman and her five-year-old daughter were seriously injured after they were thrown off from a moving bike on which they were riding pillion, when a duo on another bike grabbed the woman’s handbag on Saturday night in Thiruvanmyur.

S Nagalakshmi (38) and her daughter S Abanisha were riding pillion with her husband, Sudarshan (40) when the incident happened. Sudarshan works as a software engineer at an IT firm in Taramani, police said.

The family residing in Kamarajar Nagar 10th street in Thiruvanmyur were returning home on their two wheeler after buying groceries at a nearby store.

“It was around 10.15 pm. They were riding along 6th street in Kamarajar Nagar when the duo who probably were tailing them came near their vehicle and within a flash, they tried to grab the lady’s handbag,” a police officer said.

The woman held tightly to the bag and in the melee, the three of them fell from the bike. The men snatched the bag from Nagalakshmi and fled the scene. Locals rushed to the aid of the injured. While Sudarshan escaped with minor bruises, the woman and the girl suffered serious injuries and were admitted to a private hospital in Adyar where they are undergoing treatment.

Thiruvanmyur Police have registered a case based on a complaint by Sudarshan and have formed special teams to catch the robbers. “We suspect them to be regular offenders. Police said that the handbag had `1,000 in it.
