Yoga, The Inner Light Guiding Diffabled Thanjavur Student

He has never seen the world. Neither does he know his parents or even his exact age. The only thread holding his life together is yoga.

Almost two years have gone by since Govindaraj, who studies at the Government School for the Visually Impaired in Thanjavur, was introduced to yoga by a group of volunteers from a yoga institution who visited his school.

“Many students from my class took the training, but no one sustained it. But I was attracted to it and have been practising the art for nearly two years,” he said.

Although he was unable to articulate why he was attracted to yoga, he said he will never give it up. “It has given me so much. It has harmonised my body and my breathing,” he said. For him, yoga is perhaps a tool to get recognised by a world that is usually inconsiderate to the differently abled.

He had attempted a LIMCA record by performing 140 asanas in 10 minutes. “They rejected my entry, but I’m going to try again. I hope it is accepted the next time,” he said. Govindaraj wants to become a music director after passing his Class XII exams.
