PWD Contractors Split on 'Corrupt' List

CHENNAI: The decision by office-bearers of the Tamil Nadu Public Works Department Contractors (Engineering) Association to name top 10 “corrupt” PWD engineers has sparked a row with a section of members condemning the move.

A statement released by those opposing the move stated that the decision to release the list was taken without the concurrence of all the members. “This was done without taking proper approval from all the 130 members of the association,” the statement said. G Ekambaram, proprietor of Preethi Constructions, who signed the document along with others, gave a clean chit to the officials named in the list.

Ekambaram said the PWD officials whose names figure in the list had never asked contractors for money nor did they abuse them. Further, he said that a section of people were spreading rumours about the officials. “The allegations are due to vested interests of some office-bearers,”he added.

The statement comes nearly five days after Tamil Nadu PWD Contractors (Engineering) Association erected a banner near the PWD office in Chepauk warning that top 10 corrupt PWD engineers during 2014-15 would be named in such advertisements. The office-bearers of the association could not be reached for comments.
