Trio Held for Robbery at Palavakkam

CHENNAI: Three persons were arrested on Friday by the Neelankarai police for robbing a home-alone woman in VGP Layout near Palavakkam off East Coast Road. The three were driver Ranjith alias Maruthupandian (21) of Sholavandhan, Madurai, and decorative tile workers Guhan (46) of Vilangudi, Madurai and Pandi (23) of Dindigul.

On May 11, Guhan and Pandi entered the house of Tamilarasi (54) on VGP Layout by posing as known persons who had come to invite her to a wedding. While Tamilarasi was wondering who they were, the two took her by surprise, snatched her jewellery and fled. A probe showed that the three worked along with Ranjith’s brother Vicky.

Ranjith, who came to know Tamilarasi through her in-law Dhanapal for whom he was a driver, hatched the plan to rob her after learning that her son was working abroad. The two who executed the plan first surveyed the area on May 10 before striking on May 11.

The house maid had answered the door to the surprise of the two who were expecting Tamilarasi to be alone. Guhan, who ran to his two-wheeler parked in front of the house, and  tried to flee, but his partners in crime snatched the key. Guhan then used a duplicate key to start the motorcycle and flee.

After CCTV footage study did not help in identifying the vehicle number, the cops focused on the scribbled number. The six digit number scribbled by Guhan that was found at the crime scene turned out to be his account number with a public sector bank. This led police to Guhan, identify all the suspects. The police team picked up the three and recovered a 10.5 sovereign gold chain in tact as well as the two-wheeler used in the crime. The three were remanded to judicial custody on Friday. The police are looking for Vicky.
