There is a monumental Madras and then there is another identity of the city — its people. Between both is a moment of nostalgia, which is reminiscent of its bygone days. Capturing the many moods and hues of the city that celebrated its 376th year recently, shutterbugs across Chennai got a chance to present their frames of Chennai, as a part of Ginger Bread and Tanishq’s ‘Marvellous Madras 2015’ contest.
Three winners whose photographs were selected as the top three were awarded prizes. The photographs of the winners — Joseph Raja, Rithwik V J and Krishnan Swamy — will be on display at the Tanishq showroom at Anna Nagar till September 15. The winners entries used some of the landmark locations in the city like the Marina Beach, Santhome Church and the Madras High Court as a metaphor in their shots.
Chitra Sivakumar, franchise of Tanishq, Anna Nagar showroom told City Express, “We took an inspiration from the recently-concluded Madras Week celebrations and decided to peg it on the city. The idea also stemmed from the fact that there has been an increase in amateur photographers, who have taken up the activity as a hobby. The competiton was open to all.”
Chitra added that the contest saw more than 80 entries from across all age groups. “There were a number of criteria for selecting the winner. We looked at the colour, composition, exposure and light, and photoshopped snaps were kept out of the fray. Ramesh Raja, a senior photographer who is known for his photos of Chennai, chose the best from the lot,” she added.
On Saturday, when the winners were awarded and the exhibition was inaugurated at the showroom, renowned historian Pradeep Chakravarthy gave an exclusive lecture about the history of Chennai.
