CHENNAI: Even as the cyclone Vardah did give much pain, the one thing Chennaites were hoping for was that the rains it brings would help fill the city's water reservoirs and save the city from an impending water crisis.

But the Vardah and the rains it brought helped fill just 53 Mcft of water in the city's water reservoirs.

According to the data in the website of Chennai Metrowater Board, the total water in all these four reservoirs put together was just 1,137 Mcft on Saturday. And the water level improved only by about 53 Mcft due to the rains by Vardah. The total storage level of all the four water reservoirs put together was just 1,190 Mcft on Tuesday.

This means Chennai has just 10 percent of its total water storing capacity of 11,057 Mcft and it needs much more rains in the 20 more days left for the North East Monsoon to help it save from the water crisis during the coming summer.
