Dalit student slips off MTC bus; hostel inmates stage protest over delay in postmortem; seek driver’s arrest

CHENNAI: An 18-year-old student of New College in Royapettah died after he was allegedly traveling on the footboard of an MTC bus near Nandanam on Friday morning.

As a result, tension prevailed at the Chamiers Road, when a group of students from the SC and ST hostel blocked the road, when there was a delay in the postmortem and demanded the arrest of the driver.

The deceased identified as Mahaveer of Cuddalore was pursuing his first-year BSc in New College and stayed at the SC and ST hostel in Nandanam.

On Friday, the boy along with his friends saw the  bus (No.60E running from Anakaputhur and Broadway) near Nandanam. When the bus was nearing the telephone exchange close to the Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar statue on Anna Salai, the boy slipped when he tried to board the bus after it crossed the signal.

The boy, who suffered severe head injury, was rushed to a private hospital where he was referred to Stanley Government Hospital (GRH) where he succumbed to injuries. Consequently, the students from the hostel staged a protest for about half an hour alleging that the doctors should conduct the postmortem today. However, the students were dispersed by the police.
