Tamil Nadu government to assess crop loss after Cyclone Vardah

The state government is assessing the losses to the agricultural crops in Vellore, Tiruvanamalai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts.

CHENNAI: The state government is assessing the losses to the agricultural crops in Vellore, Tiruvanamalai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts and has deputed officials from Agriculture and Revenue departments.

Sources in the Agriculture Department said that officials were deputed to Vellore, Tiuvanamalai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts to ascertain the losses.  It is learnt that paddy, pulses, groundnut and other crops were destroyed during the cyclone that ravaged the coast of Chennai.

Sources refused to give any estimate about the losses. The team is also looking into the destruction of coconut trees in Tiruvallur district. A clearer picture of the losses would emerge soon, said the source.
Meanwhile, Chennai Metro, Kamarajar and Chennai Ports also suffered huge losses due to the impact of cyclone.

Chennai Metro officials refused to give out exact figure and stated the losses were minor.  Chennai Port officials said that they had suffered `22 crore worth loss and submitted a report to the Shipping Ministry.
Kamarajar Port sources told Express that the loss due to cyclone could be anywhere in the range of around `20 crore. “We will be getting a clearer picture only on Thursday,” said the official.

Meanwhile, government offices have been struggling to clear files due to lack of power and Internet connectivity. “It is too difficult to work without phone and Net connectivity,” complained an official.
