HC grants two-day leave to lifer for attending mother’s funeral

Chennai: Coming to the aid of a convict sentenced to life lodged in the Vellore Central Prison, the Madras HC, at a special sitting on Sunday, granted two-days leave to attend the funeral of his mother, who died on Sunday. Justice R Mala passed the interim order on a petition from Karpagam the sister of the convict. Karpagam had moved the HC for a 10-day parole to her brother Nagendran (46) to be near the bedside of their mother. The case was adjourned to February 15. The matter was taken up urgently on Sunday. The prison Superintendent had granted one day parole to him. The judge granted two days leave to Nagendran to attend to the funeral. He will be escorted to his mother’s place in Vyasarpadi at 5 pm on Sunday and brought back to the prison on February 9. 

Businessman dies after SUV falls off Irumbuliyur flyover

Chennai: A 45-year-old businessman died and his driver suffered injuries after the SUV they were travelling in fell off the Irumbuliyur flyover on Sunday night. The deceased Shivakumar, of Gummidipondy used to rent out Earthmovers. He was returning from Chengelpet along with his driver Babu when the accident happened. Police said Shivakumar was driving the SUV. Around 9 pm, when they were on Irumbuliyur bridge, Shivakumar lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle hit the parapet and fell down  about 25 feet. Chromepet Traffic investigation wing police rushed to the scene, and sent the victims to Chromepet GH where Shivakumar was declared brought dead. Babu is still undergoing treatment.
