CHENNAI: In a tragic incident here, a 38-year-old woman hung herself at her home, hours after cremating her son, who committed suicide.
Police said Ganeshwari left her 12-year-old son Manikandan, studying in Class VII in a government school, alone at their home in Maduravoyal on Sunday and stepped out. When she returned home around 2 pm, she found the door locked from inside and called out to her son. However, the boy did not respond. Ganeshwari broke open the door with the help of neighbours, only to find her son hanging from the ceiling in the bedroom.
Ganeshwari and the neighbours did not inform the police and cremated the body in the evening. Around 8 pm, local residents found Ganeshwari too hanging in the house. Police suspect the woman had killed herself depressed by the loss of her son. She was a native of Sivaganga district and had moved to Chennai only a month ago. She was doing tailoring at her home and was said to be struggling to make ends meet.
“She had separated from her husband. The couple had two children, a daughter and son. While the daughter was living with the father, Manikandan was staying with Ganeshwari,” police said.
