Boy Falls Into Sump in Chennai, Drowns

CHENNAI: In a tragic incident, a five-year-old boy drowned in a sump at a building site in Thirumullaivoyal in the city on Wednesday morning.

At around 11 am on Wednesday, K Shankar was playing at the construction site at Surya Gandhi Street, Vivekanada Nagar, when he accidentally slipped into the ten-foot-deep sump.

Hearing the screams of the boy, the labourers nearby including his parents immediately rushed to the spot and pulled the boy out.

They rushed him to Kilpauk medical college where he was declared dead on arrival.

His father Krishna Nayak told the police that they hailed from Odhisa and came to the city only three days to work as construction labourers.

The family resided at the construction site of an upcoming apartment along with the other labourers.

He also told the police that a 10-foot sump was constructed in the site and water was stored in it which was used for domestic purpose.

On Wednesday, the parents were working in the site, when the boy was playing near the sump and accidentally fell into it and drowned. A case has been registered with the Thirumullaivoyal police station.
