Tie the Knot at Greater Chennai Corporation Community Halls for Free

CHENNAI: In what could be considered a birthday gift from the Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, the Corporation of Greater Chennai Community halls would be available free for residents of Chennai to host weddings and other functions.

This was announced by the Chennai Mayor Saidai Duraisamy during the Corporation of  Greater Chennai’s budget session. Duraisamy said the community halls would be provided free of cost with effect from February 24, Jayalalithaa’s birthday. Those taking the community halls would have to pay a nominal maintenance charge which would be collected through the Corporation zonal branch office. For the year 2014-15, the revenue generated by the community halls was Rs 1.32 crore.

Meanwhile, the Corporation has also announced various projects, including Rs 50 crore for Amma theatres.

Other measures

■ 15 catamarans to be dispatched immediately to remove water-hyacinths and check breeding of mosquitoes

■ 20 mobile medical vans soon; special medical services in all Corporation hospitals

■ Cooks employed at Amma Canteens in the city will have culinary students training them to improve quality

■ Separate canteens for men and women employees to come up on Ripon Buildings premises
