NMR coaches to get a makeover

CHENNAI: The Nilgiris Mountain Railways’ (NMR) coaches are all set to get a revamp by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), with plans to commence production this year with an initial output of 15 coaches. The new coaches with cushioned seats, if given final approval, will replace the existing ones.

Addressing reporters at a press conference, ICF general manager Ashok K Agarwal on Wednesday said, “Much like the trans-view coach, these coaches will also have wide windows to enable passengers have a good view. The roof though won’t be transparent.”

Other features of the revamped metallic coach include the provision of an on-board infotainment system.  The coaches, however, will retain the existing unique rack and pinion traction arrangement to negotiate steep gradient.

“We have been in consultations with Southern Railway and currently the design for the modified coaches are being finalized. Some of the NMR coaches are decades old.” he said.
