8.76 kilograms of gold bars smuggled from SL seized

CHENNAI: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths seized 8.76 kg of gold bars worth `2.74 crore from a State Transport Corporation bus when they were being smuggled into India from the Sri Lankan coast in the Nagore-Karaikal sector of East Coast Road on Friday.

On scrutiny of two persons - Yakub Marakkiyar (48) and Mushtaq Amir Bin Mahisab (19), it was found that gold bars were concealed in their bags. They were transporting the smuggled gold which was received in the coastal village in India through a fishing vessel. During interrogation, the duo named another person Sulaiman (42) from Nagore, who had brought the smuggled gold. Sulaiman was also arrested.
